number 1’s in the book of josh: first up is jonny. this guy’s smooth simple parts and lush powerful lead lines are iconic in my generation of guitarists. playing the guitar as a piece of the puzzle rather than the spotlight. drenched in verb and delay.

sound from sound

my morning project today was putting different mics on my cab in different locations to find the best reference point. i was using a sm 57 and an akg perception 400. i found the 57 to be a bit warmer and a bit grittier than the 400. however, the 400 was very full and had great clarity which ultimately led me to mic it with both. my favorite spot for the 57 was about 2 inches away from the cab dead center in the cone tilted up and to the right about 45 degrees. then behind it about 9 inches away from the cab i placed the 400 horizontally facing the speaker about 2 inches below the center rotated upward about 35 degrees. (settings on the 400 were -10 db. front cardioid pattern. panned in the mix i mixed the 400 about 2db behind the 57 because being a large diaphragm it was much brighter.

until next time.

elevation thoughts

As far as getting musicians “excited” or interested in playing at your church, here’s a couple of thoughts….

1) Set your standards high for your ministry. Create a culture of excellence. Don’t settle. It’s honoring to God. It’s attractive to people who are far from God. And excellent musicianship and professionalism is attractive to other excellent and professional musicians. It won’t be a “hard sell” to get great players and singers involved with your worship team if there’s skilled dudes and girls there every weekend making it happen!

2) Also, don’t ever underestimate the power of putting compelling vision in front others. You may be able to snag a few players for a weekend here and there, but unless they’re tied to a larger vision that’s gripping their hearts as to why they should stay there, chances are they won’t. Cast vision. Cast it well. Cast it often.

refocus

“on that day many will say to me, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name? and then will i declare to them, i never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness”

Strong Mod

Make your Tubescreamer sound like you’ve always wanted it to! More transparent, smoother, better range and an overall wider amount of tones! We install a socketed JRC4558P chip as well as making vital changes in caps, resistors and more for the most well balanced Tubescreamer on earth.

You will notice twice the available gain and an even cleaner boost when needed. The Strong Mod responds just like a tube amp when you roll of the guitars volume, cleaning up beautifully. The low end is rich and focused and the other frequencies shine through any good amp.

overdrives.

so currently i am using

- ts9

- blues driver

- zvex  box of rock

- jhs morning glory

i love the transparency of the morning glory. it is based on the original chipset of the marshall blues breaker a very cool low to mid OD. the box of rock, based on the vintage jtm45 marshall sound has a great meaty distortion with a really nice clean boost. i have been using the clean boost to push my amp into slide gain then stacking low ODs on top. i havent been feeling the brittleness of the tubescreamer lately however, which is a bummer considering how many pedals are based on the tubescreamer chip. and im moving the blues driver i dont really use it for anything except clean boost any more. but im interested in other avenues of gain such as a rat style pedal or another marshall style pedal unless there is a warm full bodied tubescreamer. now not to completely dis the tubescreamer i still use it all the time but i just havent been feeling it lately, however i dig its bite and cutting power for lead pieces.

until next time.
